Friday’s Conversation Topics

It really never ceases to amaze me, the news I mean. Just when you thought you’ve read/heard it all, something more over-the-top comes to fruition. I mean, Arnold and Maria breaking up because of a love child? 10 years old?! Needless to say, there’s a lot more great stories that you’ll want to talk about this weekend, so let’s get to it.

- Ok, so one of the world’s most influential men is arrested for sexual assault. Then the stories start coming out how women wouldn’t “be in the room alone” with him. And he’s thrown into Riker’s Island prison under suicide watch. We’ve seen many big names crash over the last few years but International Monetary Fund chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn is one of the biggest. It just goes to show you, you lie in the bed you make. Looks good on him.

- May 21, The Apocalypse. Personally I’m more of a “2012″ type person, going with the Mayan calendar depicting the end of time rather than Judgment Day. But then again, it will be a wild Friday night if I cash in a handful of credit card cash advance checks. Could I later claim the act to be “temporary insanity brought on by fear of The Apocalypse”? Just wondering.

- 5 million games are downloaded from Apple’s App Store - every day! That’s a big number and only includes stats from 7 countries. I’m beginning to feel less nerdy all the time!

- Playboy magazine issues go online. “They no longer have to store 57 years — 682 issues — of Playboy under their mattress,” said Jimmy Jellinek, Playboy’s chief content officer. And forget about those storage fees too!

- Spinal regeneration offers hope to paraplegics. A man in America can now stand and use a treadmill, with help, after a car accident 4 years ago caused him to be paralyzed. Medicine and the mysteries of the body continue to collide and reveal their mysteries. Maybe I will live forever!

This week has given us a lot to talk about, not the least being the Royal Wedding. We’re you up early to catch some of the celebrations? Or are you a re-run type of person for historical events? Are you impressed by the pageantry or will you trash-talk the occasion? All are valid discussions but depending on the person you’re talking to they may not be appropriate.

- The Royal Wedding. I was impressed by the wedding. An historic occasion really does demand some attention, whether you’re a “royal subject” or not. And the “Duchess of Cambridge” looked absolutely fabulous. Watch The Royal Wedding archive.

- Pope John Paul II will be exhumed today ahead of his beautification ceremony on Sunday that will place him one step away from sainthood. Turnouts at catholic churches across the world are preparing for a lot of people for this Sunday Masses. This Pope certainly did bring the church into the 20th century and laid the groundwork for the Church to use today’s technology to stay in touch with the parishioners.

- The White iPhone 4 hit store shelves. I’m an Apple fan but have stayed away from the phone just because I prefer Android. And yes, your choice of phone does speak to an aspect of your personality.

- Taking the famous “slip and fall” type of lawsuits to a new level, two men allegedly take a venomous copperhead snake to a Walmart garden center and have the snake bite one of them. They didn’t get any cash but they did get arrested.

My 2011 Dodge Challenger

My 2011 Dodge Challenger

I’m feeling great! New haircut, new car… the list doesn’t have to go on from there, does it? I do have to say that the world doesn’t stop turning no matter what your personal milestones are. This is what leaves us with something to always talk about, without seeming self-absorbed, even if we are. Did I mention I bought a 2011 Dodge Challenger (see picture at left). Anyways, read about the news stories below, including my witty comments, and be prepared to talk it up tonight and this weekend. Cheers!

- Simon Cowell, of American Idol fame, signs 10 year old to recording contract. You gotta love these stories of unknowns finding fame and maybe fortune. But are we digging too deep into a child’s formative years when we see dollar signs at age ten? Decide for yourself, the video below is one of Heather Russell’s first youtube videos (there are others, of course). She wrote the song herself at age 8.

- Workmen find $1 million stashed in wall of house. Fixing broken pipes has never been so lucritive, for the state, anyways. The workers were astonished, to say the least, about finding the cash in the walls but no reason was given for the police being called. Considering the city’s nearness to the Mexican border (El Paso) finding large amounts of cash stashed in walls is usually attributed to ill-gotten gains (read: drug money) and that’s a good enough reason to me to not just take the money and run. Good job guys!

- Does knowing that 30% of the purchase price of your favorite digital magazine going to Apple make you hesitate about making the purchase? Seriously, 30%? No wonder Apple is one of the most cash-rich companies in the world. Personally I think it’s too big of a slice of the pie, cheers to Apple for holding the world’s publishers hostage though. Anyone want to donate some shares in Apple stock to me? Or build Steve Jobs a house?

- Get ahead in life and “How to think like a shrink” will get you started. Nail down the answers to the “Big Three Questions” and you’ll have enough info about anybody to keep you busily deciphering it for the rest of your relationship with that person, should you decide to take on the task. The Big Three Questions are (in my own words, read the article for their exact wording):
- Did they, and do they still, get along for family members?
- What was your life goal in your early teens (13 - 16)? Have your goals changed and why.
- If you are alone in a room with a person of the same sex do you feel homosexually challenged?

HD Mini DVR with LCD (Night Vision, Motion Detection)

I have one of these cameras. No worries about the “no fault” car accident claims with the video evidence on my side. Check it out for yourself! Primarily designed to be mounted on a car dashboard or windshield, this high speed HD video recorder enables you to easily capture video of road situations. Common uses include: insurance purposes, court evidence, capturing an officer’s abusive behavior or just plain fun! However, this handy little device is not limited to car use only. With the included battery you can take it anywhere. The camera is palm-sized so you can easily use it anywhere and slip it in your pocket when done. There are a lot of these on sale at ebay.com but none have this low price, low shipping and 1 year warranty.

It’s today that the weekly roundup of the best news stories to talk about appear here. You will want to read my comments, then the news story, and move on to the next. There isn’t a test but this is practice for real life so you have a few interesting things to say tonight and this weekend. Current events make a person interesting and interesting people get names, phone numbers and email addresses, then a date. Read on McDuff!

And remember: today is “Proud To Be Me Day”!

- Do you think you’re safe visiting a porn site? Yeah, I know, the obvious answer is “You’re not safe visiting a porn site” and, of course, you’d be right. Some guy’s just have to learn the lesson the hard way. Good thing the Feds are on the case.

- Remote controlled mice. The hell with the ethics of it all, if we can fit a wire in it, let’s make it remote controlled. there has to be a lesson about keeping control of teens in here somewhere.

- Gun-toting Santa draws fire. Yes, I couldn’t resist saying that, but what the hell, it’s Christmas. And I think that if people want to have Santa wearing a gun, or eating M&M’s or a slice of pizza, well let them. We do know all about the real Santa Claus, don’t we? Why do you think NORAD tracks him every year, for the fun of it? Geesh.

- 50 year old man get’s appointment for pregnancy ultrasound to check health of his twin fetuses. Even as I’m writing this I’m wondering why I didn’t think this up, it’s be a great practical joke if it wasn’t for the fact that this is a true story, complete with photo of “pregnant” papa and letter from hospital for ultrasound.

- How to get paid doing nothing. Forbes.com has some of the best articles and I know that I’ve now learned a trick or two. Look out work-horses, you’re load is about to get a lot heavier! There’s pictures too!

Have a great weekend!

Stuff To Talk About This Weekend

Friday’s Conversation Topics

Without a doubt one of the most popular conversation topics will be the Chilean mine rescue. People around the world were riveted to the televisions and computer watching live feeds of the rescue.
Technology not only provided a great story but allowed us to witness the triumph of the human spirit. I hope that this is a lesson not soon forgotten and not repeated any time soon.

- 22 Miners Rescued. After 69 days of captivity these 33 miners are folk heroes. The president of Chile was on hand to welcome each man back to the surface.

- UFO’s spotted over New York City. Yes, I will admit a certain fascination with space ships but one never knows… This article is about a sighting involving dozens, maybe more, of people calling the FAA about the silvery object seen hovering over Chelsea, NY, complete with photo and video of news report.

- Skype VOIP connects through Facebook and allows up to ten-way video calling. Skype users can now connect to Facebook friends with just a click in the latest Skype 5.0 software (for Windows users) release. Yes, the world is coming together…

- Shortest man in the world is 26.4 inches tall, as recorded by the Guinness Book of World Records, photo with caption.

- McDonald’s Happy Meal doesn’t rot after 180 days. Photog Sally Davies wins a bet that the food won’t rot within a few days and 6 months later the food is still as awful looking as the day it was fresh. Includes pictures and explanation of the friendly bet.

This week absolutely crawled by, didn’t it? Even if it is Thanksgiving Weekend (in Canada) there isn’t enough turkey and gravy to make up for all the crap this week handed to me.

Luckily for me, and you, this week’s news stories have once again managed to put a smile on my face. Read on and you’ll have some great conversation topics, over a turkey dinner, a beer or a Cosmo…. pick your poison and I’ll do the same. Read on, McDuff!

- Too fat to have sex couple has surgery. Now there’s a solution, rather than exercise or a change in diet, which maybe they tried first, but the reality remains that they’re probably too out of shape to actually be satisfied with the post-surgery romp. Photos.

- Beached pregnant whale found on California beach. It’s assumed that the whale hit a ship and suffered critical injuries or close to immediate death before washing ashore, article with pictures. There can be no doubt that sea travel is inherently dangerous still, don’t you agree? Yes, the beached whale story follows the story of people too fat for sex, ironic right?

- Will the real Justin Bieber please stand up. Because you’re a fraud and Facebook says so. That’s why this old guy got his facebook page yanked…. geesh, 500 million members, and this poor guy has the wrong duplicate name. Any Anne Margaret’s, Tony Curtis’s or Robert E. Lee’s out there about to be booted too?

- Chinese dude in Chinese prison wins Nobel Peace prize. May never get the award, or the almost $million prize too. At least he still can’t get a date, like you. (Yes, I know he’s married, so what?)

Have a great weekend!

Dreamcatcher

Dreamcatcher

This Friday we have a whole week of great news to look back on, be current and informed about and ready to make conversational small talk.

When you can talk about current event you score major points on the “friendship scale” so it’s worth the few minutes to breeze through these fun and informative news links I have selected for this week’s conversation topics.

- Surprise, surprise, Michael Jackson’s doctor, Dr. Conrad Murray, is finally charged with a crime. Is there any doubt that something went horribly wrong last summer? And with the autopsy report being released we sure learn more than needed about MJ’s private life. And seriously, does anyone believe that the show “Jackson Family Dynasty” was anything more than taking advantage of the circumstances and renewed interest in Michael Jackson? Just wondering.

- New Orleans Saints win the Superbowl. But did you see all the commercials? And the halftime show? And what about that parade? Well, catch up then, this is still discussable!

- Maybe your one of the millions that have an Apple iPhone. And maybe you live where the temperature dives down real low too. Well, how can you use your iPhone when you have gloves on? The answer, of course, is that you can’t. The touch screen needs the conductivity of your fingers to know what you want, what you’re pressing. If you’re in this predicament, here’s your answer. You’ll be shocked! And maybe a little bit grateful too…

- Google enters the social networking scene with a “Buzz”…. have you started yet? Millions already have. And Facebook fights back.

- Marines in Afghanistan deploy “The Breacher”, a 72-ton, 40-foot (12-meter)-long Assault Breacher Vehicle that carry a 15-foot (4.5-meter) -wide plow supported by metallic skis that glide on the dirt, digging a safety lane through the numerous minefields laid by the Taliban.

Now go, have fun and talk up a storm!

Friday’s Conversation Topics

This week we had all kinds of news, interesting stuff really, didn’t we?

- Michael Jackson’s “This Is It” movie opened everywhere and actually got some pretty good reviews.
CNN gave the movie a particularily good review here. Foxnews.com provided their review in a video clip here. While I most likely won’t b going to the theater to watch this movie, I will be buying the DVD, I’m sure.
- Did you read about the 71 year old man that is now the happy father of twins? You can read it here.
- I’m quite surprised that there hasn’t been a big outcry of broken computers and such after the release last week of Windows 7. Did Microsoft actually get something right this time around?
- Daylight Savings Time. The clocks fall back November 1, that’s right, this weekend. Will you remember or will you be very early to work on Monday? Read about the time change here.
